TheHarionagoSelvedge is a14ozJapanese selvedge denim woven at low tension and left unsinged, resulting in a pronounced hairy surface texture. Made from 100% cotton and rope-dyed in indigo, the fabric embraces raw, expressive character and visible irregularity.
The denim draws its inspiration from the JapaneseyōkaiHarionago, a supernatural figure whose name translates to “Barbed-Hair Woman.” In Japanese folklore,Harionagois depicted as a beautiful but dangerous spirit who uses her long, thorn-like hair to ensnare and kill her victims. Her hair is often described as sharp, tangled, and inescapable; a visual metaphor echoed in the denim’s untamed, bristled surface.
This mythological reference is translated directly into material form. The unsinged fibers and rough texture mirror the creature’s wild hair, while custom artwork by Canadian artist Jacqui Oakley reinforces the narrative connection between folklore and fabric.
